Bike Maintenance Schedule
When should I replace [ blank ] and when do I need to replace [ blank ] ?
Keeping your bike running smoothly is not
only important for safety but will create a better experience. Bike,
like cars, need basic maintenance to keep running properly.
Do you need assistance with you bike maintenance? Below is a general guide on what your bike needs and when it needs it.
Common Questions:
How often should I clean my drive chain?
How many miles should I ride before getting new tires?
Why is my bike making a clicking noise at each pedal stroke?
Tires
Recommended: Inspect the tire for wear
marks, fraying, and flatting of the tire. If you are experiencing
several flat tires in a row- it may be best to get new tires. Tires wear
out at different rates depending upon the type of tire and riding
surface. Make sure to check your tire pressure before heading out on a
ride. Optimal tire pressure depends on the tire and the weight of the
rider.
Cassette
Recommended: Replace when you replace the
chain or when you can see wear marks on the back side of the teeth. If
you ride with a damaged cassette, it can also damage your chain.
Recommended: Bring your bike to have your
bike chain checked for the amount of stretch using a Park Tool Chain
Checker. It is recommended that you change your bike chain at .50
stretch ( but can be up to .75 stretch) to prevent damage to the
drivetrain due to over stretching of the chain. If your bike is having
shifting issues, it could be due to the chain. We recommend cleaning
your drive train at least twice a month and lubing your chain after
cleaning it.
Cables and Housing
Recommended: It is recommended that you
change the cables every 6 month and housing annually. If you are
experiencing shifting issues ( and your derailed is working properly) or
your breaks are not ” bouncing back”- it may be time to replace the
cables.
